Mono Screen

Mono Screen: Testing for Mononucleosis

Mononucleosis, commonly known as mono, is a viral infection that is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). It is most commonly spread through contact with an infected person’s saliva. Mono can cause a range of symptoms, including fatigue, fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, and swollen tonsils. While mono can be uncomfortable and disruptive, it is usually not a serious illness and can be managed with rest, hydration, and over-the-counter pain relievers.
At Dallas Premier Urgent Care, we offer mono screening to help diagnose the condition and determine the appropriate course of treatment. Our mono screening is a quick and simple blood test that can provide results in just a few days. The test looks for specific antibodies that are produced by the immune system in response to the Epstein-Barr virus.

Who should get a mono screen?

If you are experiencing symptoms of mono, such as fatigue, fever, sore throat, or swollen lymph nodes, you may benefit from a mono screening test. It is also recommended for individuals who have been in close contact with someone who has been diagnosed with mono.

What to expect during a mono screen?

During a mono screen, a healthcare professional will draw a small sample of your blood and send it to a laboratory for testing. The mononucleosis under microscope test looks for specific antibodies that are produced by the immune system in response to the Epstein-Barr virus.

What do the results of a mono screen mean?

If your mono screen is positive, it means that you have been infected with the Epstein-Barr virus and have mono. If your mono screen is negative, it means that you have not been infected with the Epstein-Barr virus and do not have mono.
If you have a positive mono screen, our healthcare professionals will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan. This may include rest, hydration, and over-the-counter pain relievers to manage symptoms. In some cases, additional testing or evaluation may be necessary to rule out other possible causes of your symptoms.
